Five passionate farmers Nizeyimana Fidele, Kayibanda Tite, Munyengabe Ephraim, Habarurema Enani, and Aaron Ntakirutimana, have contributed to producing this exceptional coffee, celebrated for its unique flavor and rich aroma that reflect its origin. These farmers cultivate coffee along the shoreline of the crest of the Nile Congo mountains, specifically in Nyamasheke District, at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 masl. This region is renowned for its unique microclimates, creating ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Only fully ripened cherries were harvested and carefully sorted before being delivered to Rugarura Coffee Washing Station (CWS). There, the lot underwent the fully washed process. This method delivers unparalleled results, producing a cup with clean, crisp, and bright acidity that accentuates the coffee’s intrinsic flavor notes. The outstanding quality is also rooted in the farmers’ commitment to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, which promote eco-friendly practices and a deep respect for the land. Rugarura CWS ensures that every batch not only meets the highest quality standards but also supports the long-term sustainability of the environment and the livelihoods of local farming communities.

Farm details

Producer Story:

Kayibanda Tite and his fellow farmers have long produced coffee in Mahembe Sector, Nyamasheke District, along the shoreline of the Crest Nile Congo Mountain, a region renowned for its exceptional coffee. Their journey stems from Rwanda’s deep-rooted coffee traditions, where farmers historically grew and processed their own harvests. With the evolution of the coffee industry, they shifted focus toward producing premium, well-valued coffee cherries, expanding their collective coffee farmland from 1.25 ha in 2008 to 15.06 ha today.
Their success in producing high-quality coffee is the result of adopting modern cultivation practices; liming, pruning, mulching, pest and disease control, and fertilization while embracing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to protect the environment and sustain land productivity. Fertilization relies heavily on organic matter and lime to enhance soil health. These practices were reinforced through intensive coaching from NAEB extension services and the proximity-based support of Rugarura Coffee Washing Station (CWS).
Farmers methodically harvest ripe cherries, sort them, and deliver them to Rugarura CWS within eight hours. Renowned for both quality and environmental responsibility, the station received 35,674 kg of cherries from the group this season, including 3,584 kg for this specific lot. The cherries underwent the fully washed process, strictly following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and using clean water.
The process was closely monitored by qualified staff under the supervision of the CWS manager, with company Managing Director Uwizeye Immaculee present throughout. This rigorous oversight ensures that every bean embodies the exceptional flavor and high-quality standards that define coffee from Mahembe’s rich soils.
