Producer Story:

High amid the rolling hills of Kayonza District in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, at elevations between 1,500 and 1,750 meters, the Twongere Umusaruro wa Kawa (TUK) cooperative is rewriting the narrative of specialty coffee—rooted firmly in women’s leadership and quality farming.

Established with the support of Sustainable Harvest and Bloomberg Philanthropies, TUK emerged from a merger between three co-ops, with the washing station built around 2014–2015 and fully operational by early 2015

Originally carrying the name “Increase Production,” TUK coaches more than 125 women and 10 men in modern agronomic practices, post-harvest processing, and coffee business management—empowering farmers to engage directly with the specialty market

Produced Red Bourbon coffee is processed at Twongere Umusaruro Coffee washing Station using the full washed method. That means careful depulping, controlled fermentation, and grading, all contributing to a coffee with superb clarity and brightness. The cup greets you with delicate red apple, soothing chamomile, and lingering golden syrup sweetness—a graceful expression of Kayonza’s sandy-clay terroir.

But this is more than a great cup. In just a few years, TUK’s members nearly doubled their yields and markedly increased incomes—achievements fuelled by processing autonomy and fairtrade practice. The cooperative also fosters resilience and resourcefulness through seedling programs, tree planting, women’s craft initiatives, and community savings schemes.

In every sip, the Misozi – TUK Mushubati coffee speaks to the powerful potential of specialty coffee as a force for empowerment, quality, and rural transformation in Eastern Rwanda.
